"Anna Karenina" is the most famous work of one of the world's greatest writers, the Russian novelist and thinker L.N. Tolstoy (1828–1910). The novel tells the story of the tragic love between the married Anna Karenina and the brilliant officer Alexei Vronsky. Equally compelling is the subplot of the complex relationship between Levin and Kitty. The writer reinforces his observation: "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." Overall, the author paints a large-scale picture of the life and morals of the nobility and peasantry.
The novel is a mandatory part of the school curriculum. Tolstoy created many beautiful works, including "Resurrection," "War and Peace," "The Prisoner of the Caucasus," "The Cossacks," and "The Kreutzer Sonata."
Leo Tolstoy's work had a huge impact on the development of not only Russian but also world literature. His works are distinguished by deep philosophy, addressing a number of eternal questions: life and death, feelings and duty, love and honor.

Участник обороны Севастополя. Просветитель, публицист, религиозный мыслитель, его авторитетное мнение послужило причиной возникновения нового религиозно-нравственного течения — толстовства. За свои взгляды был отлучён от РПЦ. Член-корреспондент Императорской Академии наук (1873), почётный академик по разряду изящной словесности (1900). Был номинирован на Нобелевскую премию по литературе (1902, 1903, 1904, 1905). Впоследствии отказался от дальнейших номинаций.
