<p>This book stands as a manual and ready reference for structural engineers on the seismic protection of civil engineering structures. Beginning with a short historical overview, the book explains the concepts of seismic protection, describes the most common types of anti-seismic devices, and summarizes the main existing standards for anti-seismic devices, with particular reference to the European Standard. It imparts expertise on the devices that is normally restricted by proprietary interests of a few specialists. Then it goes on to illustrate the main differences between European and American Standards, examine the output of the principle laboratories globally engaged in testing anti-seismic devices, and to describe state-of-art technologies to retrofit seismically existing buildings. The volume concludes with a number of accounts of projects involving the author where structures were equipped with anti-seismic devices and provides some insight on the future development of relevant technologies.</p>

<p><strong>Dr. Agostino Marioni </strong>is Chairman of Hirun International LTD, Taiwan/Milano, Italy.</p>
<p>Agostino Marioni graduated in Civil Engineering at “Politecnico di Milano” in 1966 and got the specialization in Bridge Design collaborating with Prof. Franco Levi in Turin until year 1973.</p>
<p>He founded ALGA in 1969 and has been its chairman until 2012.</p>
<p>ALGA has been a pioneer in the field of structural engineering for more than 50 years and is primarily known in most countries of the world in the sector of bridge bearings, road expansion joints, antiseismic devices and post-tensioning systems.</p>
<p>In this position he developed several kinds of anti-seismic devices, most of them patented, and he managed an enormous number of jobs in various fields of the structural devices in general and anti-seismic devices in particular.</p>
<p>He has been the Chairman of the European Commission for the standardization of structural bearings EN 1337.</p>
<p>He has been member of the European commission for the standardization of anti-seismic devices EN 15129.</p>
<p>He is currently the Chairman of HIRUN INTERNATIONAL, a very highly specialized company in the field of design, manufacturing, testing and installation of structural devices such as bridge bearings, post-tensioning systems, expansion joints and anti-seismic devices. with main office in Taiwan and branches in India, China and Italy.</p>
